OUR OWN JOURNEYS

The ancient Silk Road was a trading route that stretched from ancient China to the markets of Europe and for thousands of years opened up the world to new products and tastes.

We were inspired to establish Silk Route Spirits because of our love of the story of the Silk Road, our love of travel and the many varied cultures that have provided the flavours and tastes that make up our range of gins.

The Silk Road was more than just an ancient trading route, for Silk Route Spirits it is an idea and a journey that transports our taste buds across thousands of miles and years of history. The silk route takes us from the lush green mountains of China, through the steppes of central Asia, the barren lands of Afghanistan and ancient Persia before crossing Anatolia and linking up with the Venetian traders of Europe.

For Silk Route Spirits the ancient trading route influenced and shaped western culture as we know it today, so many of our flavours and tastes will now be familiar such as liquorice root that originates in western Asia and green pepper corns from India. However, we have been inspired to include less familiar flavours such as Sumac, a lemon flavoured berry that grows wild in modern day Iran and Turkey and that has inspired us to take you on a unique Journey of Taste.

Taking inspiration from the ancient Silk Road we have created quality gins that have been specially crafted using carefully selected botanicals to create a unique taste.

Our attention to detail and drive for quality and service come from early experience within the hospitality industry and a lifetime spent working in the public and private sectors, helping to improve the lives of disadvantaged families within our community.

Learning about the art and science of blending and mixing the flavours of individual botanicals as well as relentlessly testing to get a perfectly balanced flavour, marks a new chapter in our lives.

Not wanting to walk away from our past though, we remain committed to continuing to support our community.

May

Following a trip to central Anatolia the idea for Silk Route Spirits was conceived by two friends while enjoying a gin and tonic in Newcastle. The concept was to develop a range of spirits, beginning with gin based upon the history and flavours of the ancient silk road.

July

We undertake training to learn how to distil alcohol and produce gin. This is a great experience that combines chemistry, maths and more than just a little bit of magic and the alchemists’ skills.

September

A period of research and development begins as different combinations of botanicals are carefully combined and distilled to produce a distinctively flavoured gin. This reinforces our commitment to the London Dry Gin process that ensures a quality and crisp drink for you to enjoy.

Silk Route Spirits is established as a company. The word route was chosen to reflect the numerous and varied additions to the silk road that have grown up over time and our ambition to draw on this rich history as we develop other spirits in the future.

January

Our research and development phase comes to an end and we are now happy with the balance and flavours of our three different gins. We have crafted our Signature and Navy Strength London Dry Gins as well as a St. Clements London Dry Gin that infuses specially dried fruit within the distilling process.
